I saw the comment: "Everyone involved did what it was that they felt had to be done." I would phrase that: "Some people did what had to be done, and some people are idiots." Such things are NOT unusual, I'm afraid. Case in point: My former employer has been taken over by the latter kind. Case in point: A $6 million seed orchard that I built in order to grow genetically superior Douglas-fir and noble fir seed for plantations. It was beginning to produce seed about the time I retired ten years ago. Two summers ago I went up there and found the fences were falling down, bears were damaging the seed trees, the equipment was rusting away in two barns. The barns were inhabited by pack rats, porcupines, and other critters. It broke my heart when I saw that. Fast forward to now. I checked the place on Google Earth, and saw that they had razed both barns and there was nothing left of them but a concrete pad. It's like they threw away everything that I devoted my life to. They aren't following my prescriptions, which I wrote to take tree stands out 200 years from when they were planted, or to manage existing stands for increased growth. They are tearing up roads so you can't even get into most of the places where I needed to get to when I was working. The remaining roads are in disrepair and the signs are shot up, weathering away, or torn up by animals. It's disgraceful. They don't need roads now because they don't want to log anymore. They don't need superior planting stock because they don't clearcut anymore. They don't log much of any kind now, in order to please environmentalists. The offices inhabited by environmentalist types. They threw out the baby with the bath water. I can agree with their motivation--after all who wants to destroy the environment. I spent my life trying to make it better. I can't forgive them for this.
