He also seemed to create this impression with Republicans that lowering taxes was ALWAYS good.

Which is a good thing. Not that its literally always good, but its close enough that that is an impression I want at least one side of the political debate to have.

They seem to just ignore the later tax "raises" that came under Reagan.

Not so much ignore as explain away with the fact that Reagan reduced tax rates by a large amount overall, and the fact that the later increases where supposed to be in exchange for cuts on spending that later was never supported by the Dems in congress.

More important than those later increases was the fact that there was no move toward entitlement reform despite the first hint that entitlements were problematic over the long run (increasing SS tax is not a reform). But it probably was politically impossible. The Dems controlled the house (and for part of the time the Senate), and Reagan had an amitious agenda that would have been sacrificed if he focused on entitlement reform. But its not just that I don't think Reagan really cared much about the issue.
