<<agreed, Koan . . . but,
1 - we don't live in a Democracy . . we live in a Republic .. much! better . . we are deteriorating into a Democracy, which will be followed by Socialism and then Dictatorship . . just like it always has.>.

First of all Democracy and Republics mean the same thing more or less. Rule by the people for the people.

The common difference is usually seen as how much direct voting the masses do. E.g. Jacksonian democracy was a time when Andrew Jackson strengthened the presidency because he maintained it was more fair as the president is elected directly by the people.

You apparently like the elite running things better because that is who constructed the constitution. It was the elite of the day, not the common man! And they constructed it for their purposes.

But here are a zillion variations and we could argue about it for ever and it gets us nowhere.

Rule by the people, instead of by dictators was a huge idea advancing civilization first put forth by the ancient Greeks in 500 BC. Quite amazing when you think about the date.

Democracy/ Republics are very messy and everyone wants to do it differently. But it is the best system we have come up with.

And the Tea party folks dismiss it without even understanding how profound it is and how difficult it was to enact.
