Yeah, it was a combination of bad run support and bad managing by Joe Torre. BTW, as you probably know, the guy they got for him from the Twins was a minor league prospect named Jesse Orosco. Of course, Jesse was on the mound in '86 when the Mets clinced the World Series.

The argument over his number not being retired (usually by people who never saw him) is that he didn't make the Hall of Fame and we need to keep our standards up. I see the White Sox have retired Billy Pierce's number and there are some close comparisons there. I only remember him as the Giant's #3 in '62, but it's interesting how some clubs are bit more respectful of past players than the Mets.
