Another question: Is there any way LU could do a cash deal now and convert the debt in October so that the net cost would be about the same as if they could do a pooling of interst today? I'm no accountant, so that may be a dumb question. Sometimes if there is a will, there is a way that doesn't involve waiting that long. Swrdfish, There was someone on this thread a few nights ago that seemed to be an excellent accountant in this area. I do not recall the name off hand but will look through old posts when I can make time. You point about Ascend's price so far down the road is a good one. I was wondering if an agreement can be made but the actual deal does not occur until Oct 98. The deal needs announced, DOJ approval and shareholder approval. Drag it out a bit I suppose<G> Glenn

CONSPIRACY THEORY: How about this explanation of recent events: ASND management plants the LU takeover story in order to boost the stock price to undermine the shareholder lawsuit. Or, maybe someone at the insurance company that has to defend them planted it. Is it coincidental that the two stories hit at the same time? If the December rally hadn't sputtered this week, ASND might be at $35 today. Either party could provide a convincing well placed source to Maria and Maria would have to protect the identity. It could be a very safe scam with plenty of deniability. It wouldn't be the first time something like this happened. Maybe the cry babies have something after all? :-) [not MHO] swrdfsh
