Now, we know that individually this isn't literally true, but it is a pretty good guideline for defining and marketing one's product. The outward focus of "silicon" "investor" was always a function of chance. The site as conceived and launched during an economic boom that was driven by technology. If the site was launched in the 2000s, maybe it would have been called "RE-Investor.com" or in the 2010s "GreenInvestor.com". The owners, advertisers and contributors to SI were all able to dismiss the "silicon" part of the name very easily. Discussions about stocks not focused on technology are normal on SI. The "investor" part of the focus is also a function of chance. Expecting the same priority to be assigned to investing, when many people are still trying to recover from their losses from 2000 to 2002 and then again in 2008, is a bit naive. The contributor customers to the website have repeatedly communicated, through the content of their messages, that this site is no longer solely focused on silicon or investing. SI ownership can choose to think that this is because they just haven't attracted the right people to the site yet, or they can choose to understand that there has been a fundamental change in their market. If SI ownership insists on defining their product and market by the name of the site, then they really need to change the site name to "www.buggywhip.com" (which it appears is not currently being used.....hmmmm, maybe I should go buy that URL).
