That said, the rural areas of the South remain sadly behind. Although, growing up on a midwestern farm, I do take special notice of rural areas everywhere. It's pretty grim in the rural Northern Midwest, now as well.
Lots of poverty, joblessness, illness. I continue to believe we need a new 'New Deal' to revitalize the country. Not likely to happen as long as we continue to spend such huge sums on defense, however.

One of the reasons my father, who was a great plains farmer, appreciated FDR, was electricity. Until FDR few farmers, anywhere had access to electricity. The Rural Electrification Administration was a great thing, benefiting the entire nation with better, cheaper food, healthier farm communities. Just one small example of the difference that government truly by and for the people, can make.
