BCB, Yes that is true, they vent large piles with bacterial action used, as they put in just enough water and feed to get the germs to propagate and then allow them to oxidise the sulfides to solubility. This makes heat and can cook the germs if the pile is allowed to do this(they cook to a slower rate, not to death, and you want the optimal rate, and so the vents)This strips the sulfide from the grains and later they use cyanide or? to leach it. At that point the germs usually die.
This can be repeated in cycles to get all the way through the grains.
