Kind of damning with faint praise. It'd be much more impressive to compare it to Eagleford, Bakken or Marcellus.

It would be even better if Britons owned the mineral rights to the land under their feet. Then they could benefit directly from any onshore exploration through royalties, as has happened in the U.S., where the vast majority of fracking is happening on private land.

We don't expect the Crown to give up ownership of those resources any time soon. The government has made some noises about direct payments to people near well heads but hasn't elaborated on the mechanism. Direct payments to people, rather than their elected representatives, could have a lot to recommend it, if they were governed by clear and consistent rules. Otherwise they'd risk devolving into holding the exploration companies to ransom.
