"Exactly… if they don't WANT deposit insurance they don't have to have it…" (I'm betting that they do want it, but they will scream bloody murder if we simply charge more to federally insure deposits at institutions that engage in much more risk-taking behavior than the local community banks do. :-) That's because they are ALL ABOUT 'private profits but socialized losses' these days. Nothing especially new about that attitude though, since the dawn of time folks have always been fond of free lunches....
