Yup MIN was huge I got back in as well wasn't fast enough on the first drop when it dropped back to .42... my bid was sitting at .39... but chased and got some at .42 and later got a bigger chunk when it hit .50 something and dropped suddenly shortly before the close where I had a bid sitting at .465....Saw some pretty big bids flashing into the close ....bidders were bidding it up big time.... probably a nice gapper on Monday....

Solution mining the key to Excelsior Mining (MIN-V)’s 358% gain Friday - Message 29338268

Danny Deadlock, TickerTrax

Excelsior Mining Corp.(MIN-V) (55cents)
www.excelsiormining.com

Congratulations to anyone fortunate to have owned Excelsior or who successfully traded it on Friday.

I saw their news release before the open Friday morning and placed a buy order at 17 cents. However it had closed the previous day at 12 cents so even with “what appeared to be” great news, the risk-averse side of my brain kicked in and I thought I could save a few pennies near the open – BIG mistake.

The stock opened at 20 cents and quickly moved into the mid 0.20’s. Before too long it powered through 30 cents and then laid waste to 40 cents – an incredible run. And stupid on my part to try and save three cents. That caution cost me thousands of dollars in missed gains.

The news looked great but when junior mining stocks have taken their tole on so many investors the past couple years, it is difficult (even on strong news) to NOT second guess your interpretation of that news – and what impact it will have on the rest of the investment community.

Mid this week Geomega Resources Inc.( TSX: V.GMA, Stock Forum) (22 cents) released “what appeared or appears” to be something quite extraordinary in the world of Rare Earths (REE) – technology related to ore processing. On the news the stock doubled but then failed to capitalize on those gains and pulled back significantly from a 35 cent high on Thursday.

The technology behind their news seemed so impressive that I would have sworn it would change their market capitalization far more than it did. Maybe that will still happen in the coming months but short term it was overwhelmed by short term traders cutting losses.

Excelsior Mining on the other hand was easier to understand and within the mainstream mining industry (copper). The news that drove the run – shockingly strong economics for such a low grade copper deposit (3.2 Billion pounds of copper averaging 0.32%).

Their initial capital costs are low and the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) is high at 45% after tax. The pre-tax payback is only 1.8 years even with an initial capital cost of several hundred million dollars.

As encouraging as these numbers were for junior copper exploration companies, it is only a positive for a very select few within the industry. A company with low grades still needs to have the right type of ore (below a water table) and access to infrastructure.

In particular, Excelsior Mining hopes to use a mining method called In-Situ Recovery (ISR). This can make the world of difference on lower grade copper deposits.

ISR has been used successfully in various uranium and copper mines around the world but this clearly demonstrates the difference it can make with mining economics when massive amounts of waste rock do not need to be moved on the surface.

Excelsior’s Project summary

The Gunnison copper project is located in a remote section of Cochise county about 65 miles east of Tucson, Ariz., in the Johnson Camp mining district. The property is within the copper porphyry belt of Arizona. The focus of the project is the North Star deposit, which currently hosts a total measured and indicated mineral resource of 3.91 billion pounds of copper (683 million tons at 0.29 per cent) and an inferred mineral resource of 1.40 billion pounds of copper (338 million tons at 0.21 per cent).

The probable mineral reserves for the North Star deposit are 3.61 billion pounds of copper (632 million tons at 0.29 per cent). This oxide and transition portion of the mineral reserve has the potential to be mined using in situ recovery methods.

The proposed project will produce 110 million pounds of copper per year for the first 14 years, then declining to year 20.
