Paul E: My bet is that by June at the latest the brain dead consumer reporters on local TV across America will scandlize the selling of "outdated" and underpowered PCs to the unsuspecting masses. It has started in the WSJournal today...

Paul -

Thanks for your input. I was hoping that the internet telephone might be the next big driver of sales, but I guess I'll have to wait a bit longer.

Re: "These seem to have a "half-life" of about 2 or 3 months"

For my home computer I'm still using a P133 (non-MMX) and it handles my internet access, spreadsheet, and word processing needs just fine. If I didn't like to play computer games I'd see no need to consider upgrading any time soon.

I think this is the problem with the sub-$1000 segment. Even though these systems will be "obsoleted" in a matter of months, they will continue to satisfy most of their users needs for quite some time. Without a new product that won't work on these machines, I think this segment will remain strong and many of its buyers will refuse to upgrade. Any ideas on what this new must-have product might end up being?
