"It's clear in everyone's mind that you don't know your ass from a hole in the ground"

Were you away to college? Is this your new and improved debating style?

Jefferson was indeed accused of being an atheist by his contemporaries and this threatened to end his career. Certainly, his occasional church attendance does not prove otherwise: I go to church from time to time, and that does not speak against my atheism in any way.

It is certainly not important for me to know whether Jefferson, in his private heart, was a deist or an atheist. We know he was a free thinker who considered Christian theology to be twaddle and harmful. He even re-wrote the new testament to keep a few parts and throw out the junk. The old testament he didn't even go near! He wanted to guide humanity in a good direction and so he rewrote the Christian bible to accomplish that objective. Denouncing (by erasing) the "Words of God"...and replacing them with your own "higher" understanding--that does not sound like a Christian to me.

But if you admire that sort of thing, then please feel free to claim him as one of your own!
