What God? If the same atrocities are happening under regimes with god or without god (which is more than the case) then there are forces here that are even more timeless, normalized & nominal of nature. If this happened with god overseeing, then the blind watchmaker is certainly back completely inplay, since that is the case, here we are, back to Darwin.

Not to say there haven't been many many natural health, happiness & temperance movements, some stoic, some epicurian, wanting to live the good life. This would also fit very well rising up out from the natural schema of things. Yet seems so bizaar that these evangelic humans would submit so many to torture for some crackpot idea that only invloved superstitions of an imaginary afterlife, when they could have just as easily all moved to Australia. ( and happily & contentedly taken up snorkeling & surfing)
