Tax loss question & Compaq.

If I sell some of my Compaq shares to off set gains on other stocks, do I have to wait a certain amount of time before I can re-purchase Compaq stock in order to use that loss to off set capital gains?

Thanks

WSJ reports the Micorage and CPQ inventory situation - problem?
The bloodshed took its toll on
all tech stocks, from the giant
International Business Machines,
which fell 3 7/8 to 106 1/2, to the
smaller tech stocks, such as
MicroAge, which tumbled 23%
after failing to meet analysts'
expectations. Woes at MicroAge,
a computer reseller, spread to a
bellwether high-tech firm, Compaq
Corp., as MicroAge noted it has a
higher-than-expected inventory of
Compaq computers and that
Compaq has approached it and
other distributors about taking
more product.
