"You can't repeat the "thousands of sects, all are Christians" argument, over and over and then just up and exempt Jefferson"

I understand the point you would like to make. You may include Jefferson if you like in the thousands and thousands of Christian sects. My point is that I believe his "Christianity" was simply a "suit of clothes" he wore to avoid being vilified and maligned. He found some good moral teachings in the bible amidst all the dregs of immorality...and he highlighted them as Christian ideals. I believe he wanted to both shield himself from attack and at the same time lead society in a better direction down through the centuries to come. Great men do things like that. They kill two birds with one stone...

On the other hand, I don't believe the majority of the sects out there are contrived in the same fashion as Jefferson's cult of Christianity: Membership of ONE! I believe most of these Christian sects (whether white supremacist, black supremacist, or space cowboys) partake of the essential components of religion--MAGICAL and SUPERNATURAL thinking. Do you see why I consider Jefferson's "Christianity" as somewhat worthy of separation from those others?? It makes little sense to call someone a Christian when he is exhorting only material values and eschewing the supernatural absolutely? He could have placed the morals of the mythic Christ in any sort of theological frame--yet he stripped Holiness and Divinity and MAGICAL THINKING ABSOLUTELY out of the equation. What other Christian sects do you find that are strictly materialistic and an exhortation to be good?? I dare say they all have an otherworldly promise and/or threat???

Anyhow, I hope that clarifies my thinking on the matter for you. You don't need to agree. I just wanted to assist your understanding of why I consider any attributions of "Christianity" to Jefferson to be tommyrot.
