Douglas,

Thanks for the post (and the appropriate highlights). I hope the folks at Ancor have their chance to put a spin on things tomorrow.

Thanks Douglas.

<< And what of Fibre Channel? This Gigabit technology is the Rodney
Dangerfield of networking; it seems to get very little respect. Fibre Channel
does seem to have some very attractive characteristics, but has never been
taken up by the mainstream networking industry and seems to be
overshadowed by ATM. >>

LOL! I love it. I went to the Gignet conference in San Jose. I have a lot of interesting opinions, but I am very tired.

I have no doubt that the networking people are a little confused by the new Fibre Channel way (ie. Storage networks). From the tiny, tiny circles I circulate in, only Cisco and 3Com are starting to get interested. FC is not going to be big on the Networking side!! How many times must that be explained!! The reasons a networking company may get involved (i think they will some day) is bc of a new territory for them---storage.

As has been explained, ad nauseum, on the networking side, FC has too much of a battle against ie. a fast/giant ethernet empire. FC Will be used for selective high-end apps, but it is tough to compare to the cheapness and marketing power of Ethernet (E, FE, GE). There will still be some people who need the intensity of a powerful Networking LAN powered by FC, but the brunt of the baby is in the Storage Environment...a new beginning. Like I learned a few times over today, when Seagate (the lonesome dove and biggest dd maker) went FC instead of GE, ATM, etc.........the Fibre Channel industry grew wheels. :-) Certain things may have set in motion...

People, please picture a server. On one end, say "Ethernet...Fast or Gig baby"...on the other side, say, "What?"....I said, "Say what?"..."I say, Say, Fibre Channel!". I say, what exactly is the competition for FC for back end networks in the future? nada.... :-)

Another interesting note that someone can surely correct me on...there were more nodes shipped this year in Fibre Channel than the first Four years of ATM. True? Do your research. :-)

Of course, i have no idea if ancor will bring in the goods. i only hope so.

ALL IMHO
