Ascend Supports ITU Move to Create High-Speed 56K Modem Standard; Leader in 56K Ports Expects Standard to Further Spur Demand for Its Products Business Wire - December 11, 1997 08:03 %ASCEND ASND %CALIFORNIA %COMPUTERS %ELECTRONICS %COMED %TELECOMMUNICATIONS %INTERACTIVE %MULTIMEDIA %INTERNET %PRODUCT V%BW P%BW ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 11, 1997--Ascend Communications, Inc., (NASDAQ:ASND) announced today that it supports the declaration of consensus on a 56Kbps modem standard -- called V.pcm reached yesterday by a committee of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Ascend, which for some time has supported 56K technology developed by Rockwell Semiconductor and Lucent Technologies, is the leader by a two-to-one margin in deployment of 56K ports at ISPs worldwide. The ITU is expected to endorse the draft recommendation at a meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, in January 1998 and ratify a standard in September 1998. Ascend and Rockwell are working aggressively to deploy the new standard in Ascend's MAX and MAX TNT WAN Access Switching products. In the near future, Series 56 modems, based on Rockwell's K56Flex technology, will be upgraded via the new V.pcm standard with a no-cost, software upgrade. "We are very pleased that the ITU has reached agreement on this standard, as it eliminates the uncertainty for consumers and service providers in deploying 56K technology," said Kurt Bauer, vice president, access product management, at Ascend. "With the ability to easily upgrade both Ascend's WAN Access switches with Series 56 digital modems and client modems, we foresee increased consumer demand. This removes the remaining impediment to wide-scale deployment of the technology -- it's really a win-win for the industry." Bauer added that over 50 percent of Ascend's Internet Service Provider (ISP) customer base has already deployed 56k Points-of-Presence (POPs) worldwide. With leading market share, Ascend's MAX and MAX TNT Wide-area Network (WAN) Access Switch product line is the access solution of choice among the ISP community.
