MediaOne, for one, offers one way cable modem service with a telco return in certain areas. It's a viable alternative when the cost of overbuilding the cable plant cannot be met, and you have customers that are willing to pay to have a high speed downlink.

In my opinion, one way cable modem service is still a lot better than a regular old dialup connection to an ISP. I know I would give up my ISDN line and take it any day! Of course, from what I understand, that's what I'm going to be doing soon (Cablevision is going to be offering cable modem service with telco return in Boston in mid-1998. Hey, it's better than nothing!)
