Smart glass is not new technology. I remember a business in the city I live in, all his windows in his office were smart glass, he could dim them or make them completely black. This was back in the early 90's.

You miss the point. "Smart" glass is now ubiquitous. Perhaps a better analogy would be that first came the tire, then came a tread design on the tire. I'm sure the very first company that put a tread on a tire did quite well. I think it goes without saying that the vast majority of people when they buy tires with a tread design, most of which are completely different, are more concerned about price, durability, warranty, etc. than the unique design itself. Perhaps if I had a new tire company I might try the tread design approach, but not one created 15 years ago on the assumption if it were that good there wouldn't be sooo many other competitors.
