In the summer of '92 I lived in a little town called Lencois in Bahia, Brazil. We panned for diamond and carbonado in the creeks that washed over ancient conglomerate rocks that hosted the stones. The town even had a union hall for the prospectors / garimpeiros and also a museum. I remember one scorching hot afternoon we dumped our little bamboo vial of diamonds on the table in an Italian restaurant to the amusement of the waitress. She came back and dumped her vial which had ten times as many stones as we did put together.
