Hi Bob, I am not sure that I know the answer to your question

I know that institutions, hedge funds, etc have sizeable positions in the futures as part of several strategies that they may employ. I suspect that the speculators represent a larger group than they would in many of the commodities that are traded such as the metals, grains, etc since the end product is something that the producers as well as the users have a need for in its tangible form. The liquidity in the pits are maintained by the locals who look to scalp a few tics on both the long and short side.

The minis would hardly be a vehicle that the people with larger positions would want to use -- and so I suspect that it is a field that is played primarily by the locals and the speculating public.

But as I say -- I really don't know the answers to the questions that you have asked -- and am speculating--pun intended:)
