How can AAPL beat on all fronts but fail to beat the iPhones sales number. There is some disconnect here it looks like.
They were able to do it because iPad beat, Macs beat and most of all because ASPs on the iPhone beat (expectations) by more than unit sales missed.

The analysts are so caught up in their own monolithic perceptions of Apple the cell phone manufacturer, they're not giving Apple credit for being internally diversified enough to beat the their own earnings estimates, despite missing the units sold estimate by 4 Mu.

Now, they're focusing on bringing down the units sold estimates for the current quarter while overlooking the fact that the existing numbers prove that it wont matter as much as they are trying to make out of it.

The company is still a growth company that is paying investors to stick it out for the long haul, because repeated home run products take time to bring to bat.
