Moorpark is where ACORN lives.

Thirsty for a change in weather

California is facing the worst drought it has seen since record keeping began about 100 years ago. Last year was said to be the driest ever in the state, and 2014 is off to an equally ominous start.

Local drinking water comes from the State Water Project in the north, but as California’s dry weather pushes into the new year, readings from the Department of Water Resources show the snowpack’s water content at about 20 percent of average for this time of year. The department’s first snow survey of the winter, in fact, found more bare ground than snow. So far in January—a month when about 3.5 inches of rain typically falls—we haven’t seen a single drop.

No ACORN for Fillmore.

California Drought Conditions

Submitted by Fun at Foster on January 21, 2014 - 5:09pm

The Governor of California has recently declared a state of drought emergency for the state. Locally, Lake Casitas shows sad evidence of the extended lack of rain.

The first image was taken in April of 2006. The second image was taken this past Saturday, January 19, 2014. You can see the stark difference between the two images. As residents of Ventura, we all need to do our part to conserve water while we are in this emergency. Foster Library can help with materials on water conservation as well as books about native plants.

They didn't build Lake Casitas, either. Los Padres Nat. Forest. We built that dam
