Yes, it was easy. Originally it was easy to find an ounce of gold - today it is increasingly more expensive. Think oil too! The dust bowl didn't count as they were largely a weather related event. You are arguing something that is unarguable. That originally America was an untapped treasure trove of easy to get resources.

Here is another example of what I am thinking; rising sea levels. We have much of what we have already built on the edge of the sea. If the sea rises, the consequences are humongous as to cost. We have reaped the rewards - now we have to pay for those rewards. That means reducing our carbon footprint; read - even more cost to produce CLEAN energy.
