As corny as it may seem, this is an example of what makes me proud to be from here:

Savvy artist crowdsources #HowSeattleRiots to fix Seattle’s famed Pergola

Posted on February 4, 2014 | By Jake Ellison

Screen grab from the crowdsourcing site for raising money to fix Seattle’s Pergola.

The only bummer of the entire Super Bowl championship hoopla Sunday night was that our fabulous pergola in Pioneer Square got some of its glass broken. But even that has turned into a Super Bowl win.

Enter the savvy “ mixed-media sculptor” from Seattle’s Beacon Hill who (after conversations on social media) jumped in the game — 12th Man style — and set up a crowdsourcing fundraiser to fix the pergola and erase the stain.

“I was seeing the news of damage to the pergola and felt that it was a shame,” said Seattle artist Amanda Gallagher Quinn. “And, I thought the people who broke the glass hadn’t done it intentionally and given the chance they would want to fix it.”

Here’s that damage:

So Quinn set up a page on gofundme.com, a “crowdfunding for everyone” site, to raise the $25,000 the city of Seattle said it could cost to repair the structure. She also used the Twitter hashtag that has been getting around (hilariously) poking fun at how Seattle “riots” — #HowSeattleRiots — to lock in support.

And: Pergola barely survives Super Bowl, will the infamous Seattle Freeze?

Within 21 hours, Quinn’s effort had raised $16,046 and would have, surely, raised the full $25,000. However, Seattle Parks and Recreation also got $10,000 from the Western Washington Honda Dealers and asked her to shut down her efforts. So she reset the goal to $15,000 (which is what you see in the photo above).

“We are extremely grateful for the donations,” said Seattle Parks spokeswoman Joelle Hammerstad. “It frees up money to use down the road” for other stuff that will inevitably break and need fixing on the old structure.

Also, the pergola fixes may not require the full $25,000 and any money left over between the two donations will go to the Seattle Parks Foundation for other Pioneer Square green spaces.

Quinn said she wants whatever is left over to go toward replacing the plants in median strips in the area that were trampled Sunday night.

Here’s how Quinn explained the fundraising efforts on the gofundme site:

On Sunday February 2nd, the Seattle Seahawks made history by dominating Superbowl XLVIII and the 12th Man roared in triumph. From Bothell to the U-District, Ballard to Pioneer Square, we filled Seattle streets with our dancing, cheers, and Seattle’s iconic polite style of celebration. Polite or not, there was a party foul in Pioneer Square. Seattle’s historic Iron Pergola was damaged to the tune of $25,000. Now it is time to clean up after ourselves, because this is truly #HowSeattleRiots

Let’s give the parks department some help in replacing the things we broke, and show that the Seahawks truly have the best fans in the league.

This is the party scene downtown Seattle the night of victory:
