OT: I could have video taped it with my iPhone but I took a video camera with my mono pod.

Not sure if this is still the case with iOS7, but a few years ago, my brother was using an iPhone to video my son's preschool graduation when he received a call in the middle of it. Even though he did not answer, just getting a call apparently dumped the video he'd been recording. It might be a good idea to switch to airplane mode before using an iPhone to record anything long form.

I wouldn't mind at all for some the stand alone functionality (music, clock, stopwatch, etc.) be on an iWatch but also have some shared features that might require my iPhone to be close by. This could be things like notifications, text messages, or maybe even the iWatch could be involved with Mobile Payments?

No doubt. But wearables that have come to market so far have shown that's not *enough* of a benefit to cause people to want to spend a pretty penny for the additional device. If the Applie iWatch was both cheap and socially acceptable, some will buy it, but the analyst with the $17B figure is smoking something.
