More specifically "hide the decline" referred to a published paper dealing with an anomaly in one out of four tree ring data sets, where all four agreed historically, but one set diverged during the instrumental temperature record. This is an interesting problem, and the paper addressed the issue. What it is not is a conspiracy to fudge data, which is what the accusation became. That is the reason those who made the accusations should in fact face defamation charges, and assuming a competent legal system, they should stick. TWT if the legal system is competent.
