Institutions that you've heard about deal with institutional imperative. Many asset managements just diversify to match indexes. Few are true value investors. Also, size is a disadvantage. Smaller value funds outperform handily over long periods. Guys like Pabrai, Mecham, Oceanstone, Punch Card, Mittleman, Meryl Witmer, etc. There are people who handle their own accounts that also outperform. Guys in PE firms tend to be great investors. Is this luck or skill? Who knows (correlation does not imply causation), but investors who treat stocks logically tend to do really well over time.
