Cos Apple has nothing to sell to the general market and the high end is drying up or those consumers are buying from someone else... I suspect a fair bit of both...

For that to be the case, of course, sales would have to explode beyond forecasts. And you could be right - it could happen - but your argument would be that by resuming production and selling them very cheaply (they'd have to be at rock bottom prices to cheap with Android phones with peer functionality), they'll regain lost market share. Can't rule that out, but given how bad the market share slide has been, seems extreme to me. Many are proclaiming that Apple has given up the fight to reclaim market share, and this would clearly conflict with that.
