You're right I should not have called them "onerous"-- The contractual volume commitments are only onerous if Apple enforces them. If carriers are free to buy as many or as few iPhones as they like regardless of their obligation, then it is wrong to call them onerous.

Verizon Wireless listed $29B in purchase commitments for 2013 vs. total 2013 revenue of $81B. Assuming those were all iPhones, that would be 48 million iPhones, about 30 million more than VZ was able to sell for the full year.
