Think of it another way. How many people had an MP3 player before the iPod/iTunes came along? Now, consider how many people own one. Again, I was never compelled to buy an MP3 player but ended up buying 2 iPods. The current Smart Watches on the market are the MP3 players of the day. The only question is whether or not Apple can produce an iWatch that has features that compel folks to buy.
A good point, but you're actually arguing the same as me. iWatches *would* be like MP3 players are today. They do the same functions as another device (smartphone) that is commonly carried around already. This is precisely why iPods are all but a dead product (look at the last couple of years)... they are redundant. So the iWatch would be asking people to take a step back in time and add another device to their person instead of shedding one.
