I seem to recall that Microsoft bought $150m of stock a number of years ago when Apple was on the brink of going under. I don't recall what happened to it, I suppose they must have sold it at some point.

I am pretty sure it was an equity deal rather than debt, although I might be mistaken about that.

Technically, equity is the residual claim to assets after liabilities. If a company can fund operations internally, good for stockholders.
