That dominance doesn't equal profitability for any OEM who isn't also charging top tier prices. The only one making bank off this "dominance" is the Google ad machine.
Exactly. Google's brilliance. Hardware manufacturers inevitably get into intense, low-margin battles. Look what happened in the PC and chip industries. Smartphones will be no different over time. Samsung, Apple, and the others will have a really tough time maintaining margins. Google will be fine, as they make money from the use of the devices, not the devices themselves.

Anecdotally, Google has been cold calling me weekly for the last year hoping I'll place some online ads. Feels a little desperate…
If you look at the historical growth of their ad revenue (including in recent quarters), I think you'll change your mind about desperation driving it. They don't cold-call, either. You sure it was legitimately from them, and if so, not tied to a previous relationship?
