That's super interesting, thanks. I knew of the NTT Docomo launch, but didn't pay enough attention to its impact. If what you suggest happens in Japan, it will be interesting how that impacts the global share picture. If the attraction to Apple in Japan is cultural (they're known for wanting to follow US trends), I have to wonder if A) the lag time in trends partly explains it, as the Apple boom peaked in the US a couple years ago so it might just be showing full force in Japan now, and B) if cultural appeal is the real driving force (i.e., being "cool"), if the later releases of different phone sizes will really matter much, as the Japanese who wanted to adopt Apple because of its name have already largely done so. If you modify the link I sent earlier to zoom in on more recent data only (that's one of the reasons I like this public source... it updates in real time), you can see that 2014 so far has been roughly flat for both platforms. I'd watch this chart *very* closely (update the date at the top) as soon as the new phones come to market to see which way the trend lines head.
