NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Winstar Communications Inc. (WCII) formed a new unit, Winstar Broadband Services, to increase its presence in the data-communications market.

In a press release Thursday, the company said the unit will offer Internet services and data transport, LAN/WAN professional services and networked applications.

Winstar named Howard E. Taylor president and chief operating officer of the new unit. Taylor, 47 years old, was most recently president of Southern New England Telecommunications Corp.'s (SNG) Custom Business Group.

As reported earlier, GoodNet, which Winstar agreed to purchase for $22.5 million, will be part of the Broadband Services unit.

Winstar provides wireless telecommunications as well as long-distance phone and data services.
