OK, I'll take you at your word

You are simply a student of government forms, and are particularly taken by the nominal democracy that is employed in the USA

You are an admirer of Abraham Lincoln, as nearly all Americans are, and have read both the Emancipation Proclamation and the Gettysburg Address

Since Lincoln was a Republican, it follows that the values he espoused are those that form the philosophical basis of the GOP

Looking thru the wrong end of a telescope from South Africa, it is not hard to see how you have arrived at your views of matters political in the US, a topic of some fascination it seems, for some far away observers

I can only offer a bit of guidance to help in understanding the nuances of American politics, circa 2014

First, although Lincoln was indeed a Republican, it is not a difficult exercise to see how the views he espoused are totally inconsistent with the values of todays Republican Party

Wikipedia actually provides a good discussion of Lincoln, which I am sure being a fan of the website, as I am also, you have already perused, but in case you haven't

en.wikipedia.org

There is no doubt that Lincoln would not be welcome in the Tea Party dominated Republican Party of today, nor would Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan...etc

None of these individuals, with the policies they advanced as elected leaders, would garner support in todays GOP

Government of and by the people is not a value of todays Republicans

A brief investigation into the concerted efforts of todays GOP to disenfranchise minority voters and gerrymander Congressional districts to defeat potential populist candidates, should convince any honest observer that they ain't the Party of Lincoln no mo...

Todays GOP is dedicated to maintaining the skewed distribution of wealth in the US and can and will do anything possible to keep the reverse Robin Hoop syndrome going as long as possible

That is the only thing that is on their agenda

..all else are simply means to that end

The GOP has been reduced to an instrument of greed

That is their only purpose and everything they say and do can be traced to this one driving force
