The tendency to treat symptoms is not new. Often treating the symptom treats the illness. We can trace our modern medicine back to the Greeks and even at that time there appears to be a knowledge that the symptom was not the disease, but that often treating the symptom alleviated the disease. It is one of the essential problems of dealing with the unknown as it relates to human health and survival.

There is no great conspiracy, these guys are all too greedy to be conspiring. There is however a significant effect in the power of the Oligopoly of Pharma. And when large corporations are competing they are likely to run down the same road, fighting all the way. They may not be on the best road for human health, but it is highly unlikely that there is come secrete cabal sitting back and playing chess with human lives. It implies too much foresight and planning. These corporations are into very short term profits, and move from one profit center the the next. Their need to create profits drives their direction and their marketing. They'd be selling snake-oil if they thought there was a profit in it--complete with all the necessary cautions on the bottle.

If there was good money in overall better basic health, then they would be in it. There is not. Therefore there is no reason for corporations to be interested in good health-yours, mine,or society's.. That has never been their business, and likely never will be in their business plan. There is nothing evil in this, it is just fact.
Your profit center is not theirs. People need to run their own business, in this case their health, for their own good. It often runs counter to large Pharma, but as Lindybill points out it often runs in the same direction. Sometimes you have to treat the symptoms because it is debatable as to what the disease is, or whether you have the time to deal with it.
