do you live in a gateway city? if not, maybe part of the problem was that part of your ftel call was switched over to a regular telco line.

re: volume. did you try to adjust the volume using *1 on your phone?

the reps from ftel gave me a call (in guam) using the tempest, but the westcoast-guam portion of the call was over a regular telco line, and there was a very evident echo. ftel routed the call LA-ATL-LA-GUAM. ftel claimed that the echo was probably due to the telco line, which i found believable since some calls from the mainland to guam do sound hollow depending on the carrier. i was able to eliminate some of the echo using *4 (net delay).

however, my brother-in-law (he works for credit suisse) in nyc used the calling card to gateway cities and was very happy with the quality of the call, even during multiparty calls. his only complaint was that the "*" function to control volume and net delay interfered with some voice mail systems.
