I guess there very likely have been voters who have been faced with the dilemma that they do not regard their party's candidate as a suitable choice for America's highest office and all the responsibilities and demands that go with it. But on the other hand they don't want the party that they would usually vote for, be put at any disadvantage.

So, in some instances it becomes more a case of a vote Against the party that the voter may not support, rather than For the individual representing his favoured party.

I'm not sure what your reference to "clearly inferior people" is all about, where "inferior" appears to be the operative word ?
