The Republican party has been building itself with rejects from the (D) party since FDR. The (D)'s used to own the south, until they decided to support civil rights legislation, lost all their racists, which the (R)'s gladly adopted and threw social bones to. The (D)'s went pro-gun control, and the (R)'s gleefully adopted all the former (D) gun nuts. The (D)'s supported a woman's right to choose whether to burden herself with a baby then a child for the next 18 years+, and the (R)'s happily adopted the opposite side of that position along with all of Reagan's "Christian Coalition". They are just reaping what they've sown. The loonies they thought they were co-opting for votes now have enough power to stymie any sort of sane governance by the (R)'s. Which makes them look like a bad bet for the independents that swing elections. The (D)'s suck, but the (R)'s seem insane.. The sad part of that is, the (D)'s NEED a viable opposition party, one that presents a sane idea for governing America. Without one, they are free to do whatever they want.
