Both the Catholic and Mormon churches see a woman's role as getting serially pregnant and pumping out babies until the baby making machinery stops, thus to create more Catholics and Mormons. Women can't rise in the church to the positions men can, because they aren't men's equals.

I'd like to see the new pope address this, but I doubt he will.

Many of these churches are a lot like the political parties. They make their statements but that doesn't mean you have to agree or follow all their pronouncements in order to be a member.
That said, Southern Baptists are run by a generally conservative group of older white men. Jimmy Carter was an active member all his life, but joined another Baptist group some years ago over the equality issue.

And as for some of the remarks in here about Catholics, surely many of us know Catholic women who practice birth control and are otherwise quite Liberal. I certainly do.
