Ted, I saw that article. I spent a good portion of my growing years at that mall. Most of the shops there were too pricey for a young kid like me, but they had excellent movie theaters and a great computer store called "Software Etc." Later on, they had Dave & Busters.

However, the writer of that Gawker article is wringing his hands too much. Really, these closed-down malls are just "relics of greed, consumerism, and an antiquated way of life"? I'll remember that the next time traffic slows down on my local highway because people are waiting at the exit ramp to the local mall during weekends and the holiday season.

As for White Flint Mall, I don't know why it's closing down. Maybe it's because there are just too many damned malls in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.

Lots of suburban malls are closing or languishing. Retail has been overbuilt.......esp in suburban areas.

Malls come and go. I had a client in TX that had stores in just about every mall in the Dallas area. While something like North Park would become a high-end mainstay for decades -- with rent to match, a new one like Prestonwood might find itself lost in a sea of new development within a couple of years. It is almost hit-or-miss depending on the location and how fast it develops.

Myself, I haven't been in one in more than a decade, I suspect. It is entirely possible I'll never ben in one again in my life. Nothing against them except they sell cheap crap and they reek of deep fryers that need the oil changed out. And there isn't one thing in a mall that I really want, actually (I used to go to mall bookstores all the time, but I haven't bought an actual book since the first Kindle showed up).

I'm not sure why malls are even needed anymore. Close 'em all down. No one wants to work in them anymore, since you're better off just staying at home and collecting your benefits.

Whenever I go to a mall, I marvel at all the idiots shopping there. I go about once a year to check out the proletarian consumer culture. Malls ALWAYS have the highest prices anywhere, so why shop there? Go online, dumbass!
