Two things about whatsapp. 1) It's not free. The first year is free, then it's $.99/year after that. 2) It bypasses your IP charges for text messages, so you have unlimited "free" text messages. 3) It' cross platform (OK, I lied about the two things) Sure will be interesting to see how Google monetizes that no adds culture.

I doubt that they go to direct ads but rather build a platform and attempt to monetize that. recode.net Bringing this back to Apple, it seems like there could be a lot more that they could do with their apps, both in terms of services and in terms of monetization without pushing ads. Slacker
