Two things about whatsapp.

1) It's not free. The first year is free, then it's $.99/year after that.
2) It bypasses your IP charges for text messages, so you have unlimited "free" text messages.
3) It' cross platform (OK, I lied about the two things)

Sure will be interesting to see how Google monetizes that no adds culture.

I doubt that they go to direct ads but rather build a platform and attempt to monetize that.

Bringing this back to Apple, it seems like there could be a lot more that they could do with their apps, both in terms of services and in terms of monetization without pushing ads.

Which I think is a big thing to their users. I think these kind of users are not loyal. They were the first to adopt to facebook and the first to leave when their parents joined facebook.

Its kind of encouraging in a way. I know my facebook use is slowly petering out. I wouldn't miss it that much if I left altogether.
