It's all about the users. Google or Apple would love to have the users. Google could monetize them better than anyone, but Facebook most closely met the vision of the WhatsApp founders. It will clearly give a boost to Facebook's user base, but because the pay-instead-of-ads culture doesn't fit the FB model, I think they'll hemorrhage money on the deal in the long run. Google might not have fared better, though they would have had a better shot (they'd take over the Play Store revenues, for starers, and could give the product a huge marketing boost by integrating into their suite of products). Not sure how Apple would have utilized their base.
