Let me explain the above and then see what you think. Before the 60's the entire world, for all of history, lived according to myth and script i.e. a person took the values and beliefs of their family and culture. There was no place on earth for all of history this was not true. There were small groups like Gertrude Steins bunch, but never a large mass movement like the 60's was. Then in the 60's we Hippies said: "wait, we do not have to live our lives like you did or want, or believe what you believe. So for the first time in history a large mass of people around the world rebelled and said, we get to manifest our own destiny as we see fit. And it was a rebellion. Rat was part of it, ask him. Every friend I had shunned me when I joined the counter culture. We had just one table for the hippies out of 22,000 students at San Jose. And we were studying the great thinkers like Hermann Hesse, Jack karouac, eastern religions, the Huxleys, Bertrand russel etc. And it was no mistake UC Berkeley was our headquarters. Therein lay the smartest of us and so the strongest. it took a lot of internal fortitude to stand up to everyone on earth for you beliefs. We were a small group at first. Now to get to your point. Out of this new free thinking reality came a zillion new ideas e.g. racism, sexism and gay bashing were nuts and we fought them head on. Free speech was huge as was civil rights, Viet nam war, etc. We were confronting everything we thought was wrong with our culture.Today it is all obvious to us, but it was not in the early 60's. Even being allowed to wear long hair was taboo. And being who you are:" do your own thing:. As Bob Dylan wrote: "something is going on and you don't know what it is, do you Mr, Jones? So the 60's was sort of the starting point for a transformation of "man the pack animal" to man teh independent thinker. And we can see it in spades with half the women in the country having tattoos today-lol.
