"We liberals consider gay children completely normal. In fact I was sort of hoping one of my two daughters would be a lesbian. I find lesbians especially sweet people."

I cannot find anything to disagree with there. But he is using normal as in "ok"--maybe even perfect! And indeed, sexual nature is not a question of character. How one treats other people is a question of character and morality. And he certainly has a right to hope his daughter might be a "sweet" lesbian. It is a free country and people have their own hopes.

So, I understand his point and the fact that he was trying to (perhaps) overstate his case in order to make a point relevant to your ongoing conversation. But regardless...even though most "deviancies" are ok and do not reflect on character, sexual deviancy, nevertheless, does usually attract the bigotry and opprobrium of any society mired in primitive religious moral constructs stemming from tribal times. So I would never hope that anyone I know was sexually out of the ordinary because we live in a world where innocent people are punished by the ignorant.
