They only changed their affiliation when Bush made Republicanism look stupid as hell. Many Bush Republicans moved toward Libertarianism because they didn't agree with the wars. Others did so because they didn't agree with the spending. Others did so because they recognized that even good policy made under one president can be corrupted by the next. You can't paint everyone with such a broad brush.

I can tell you that I abandoned the R's when they started acting like the Dems when it came to economic and monetary policy. There was a time when free markets and sound money mattered to the R's. That is no longer the case. That ended with Dick "Deficits don't matter" Cheney. And as we've seen with, Barack "You didn't build that" Obama, the Dems also love to spend money and take your freedoms away. I also don't much like the foreign or domestic policies of either party. They both are shredding our constitution and letting the NSA, CIA, and Homeland Security run wild. Libertarians don't believe in government involvement in the main areas of our lives. It's a live and let live party. That about sums up my approach to life. Don't mess with my life and I won't mess with yours.
