All,

Volume's a little slow today. A little 'chunky style' news would sure liven things up a little.

Elk,
Here's their press release. My take on it its that it really isn't
a serious "business app" device....seems to me kind of targeted at the
WebTV market. If this is the best of show in the hardware category, makes me wonder what the judges were looking for.
Good luck and timing,
Lew

CIDCO iPhone (TM) Countdown Begins

InfoGear and CIDCO Unveil Series of Strategic Announcements
to Support Web-based Telephone Launch Set for January

Fall Internet World, New York, NY, December 8, 1997-- While other companies are dreaming of a "killer" Internet product,InfoGear Technology Corporation and CIDCO Incorporated have teamed up to deliver it with the CIDCO iPhone: the market's first Web-based telephone. Today, the two companies are respectively announcing strategic relationships with national and international companies in the areas of distribution, ISP service, content, and vertical market applications. These announcements, which are more specifically
described below, are intended to pave the way for a total solution for Internet access, World Wide Web browsing, email, and customized content, merged with advanced telephony features that make the Internet as easy and convenient as using the telephone.

The CIDCO iPhone is an advanced telephone that is designed to provide easy, plug-and-play access to the Internet, World Wide Web and email. In addition to advanced telephony capabilities like conference calling and Caller ID, the CIDCO iPhone offers simple touch-screen access to the World Wide Web as well as services that bring users up-to-date information such as Yellow Page directories, news, weather, movie listings and sports. Email is quick and efficient on the CIDCO iPhone, with a pull-out keyboard.
Powered by a sophisticated client/server architecture and an intuitive touch screen user interface developed by InfoGear, the CIDCO iPhone was designed and will be manufactured and marketed by CIDCO. Market introduction of the CIDCO iPhone is scheduled for January, 1998. "The drumroll has begun for the CIDCO iPhone," said Daniel Eilers, CIDCO's President and Chief Executive Officer. "We believe that the partners being announced today will help provide the necessary services, content and distribution to insure that CIDCO iPhone users will have a much more efficient and fun way to communicate, get information and
shop through their telephone. We are delighted that these companies have chosen to join us as we prepare to launch the CIDCO iPhone."

"The iPhone is going to become the hot new technology for 1998 and beyond," said Jim Greenway, vice president of marketing for InfoGear. "We have worked very hard gathering the strategic pieces to deliver the total solution to CIDCO iPhone customers, so their experience is easy and valuable. That includes, customized vertical-market content, and national and international ISP service. We are very excited to be entering this final phase of the launch."

Well - really doesn't seem to be a good category for Franklin..
DESKTOP HARDWARE & INFRASTRUCTURE HARDWARE are really are not it..
iPHONE thing won desktop hardware --- description reminds me
of a faddish thing like the good ol' 8 track tape decks that won't last long..
Might as well use something that already exists - like a phone booth :-)
