Functionality will be the new race. My guess is Apple is zeroing in on that. They were first to have a fingerprint scanner. They've seen the popularity of sports bands. They understand that the field of sensors is ballooning.

Put that together with the demographics of medicine and the economics of medicine.

How much is PREVENTING a heart attack or stroke worth to Kaiser Permanente? or any other health network? one whole hell of a lot.

That nightly data transmitted back to Kaiser via their app, will be scanned for anomalies or data that the doctors need to know about immediately.

They'll be prescribing the device that is best. So if a Samsung watch is behind on a sensor, like it was on fingerprint scanning (might still be, we have to see if their version works) then the doctor is going to prescribe an iWatch.

Money is not going to be a big factor here when you are talking about preventing surgery that could cost in the tens of thousands of dollars.

Functionality will be the new race.

How many people are in Europe, Asia, and the US who are over 60 years old? With money? You are talking about a well heeled demographic.
